Calcified Bloom

Calcified Bloom is a photographic study from a five-year sculptural documentation in which CMU blocks and gypsum forms were left outdoors to weather, shift, and receive the landscape. Early photographs from 2020 revealed structural dots—like architectural sketch grids—that became drawing surfaces and informed Newville’s book, indiscernible elements: Calcium. Later images, taken in 2025, are presented without these markers, reflecting time’s passing and a shift in how she chooses to see. While sustainability efforts aim to preserve, Calcified Bloom quietly observes how by doing nothing, something else grows.

Calcium Constructs

This body of work uses common construction materials—drywall, gypsum, joint compound, and plywood—as both surface and subject. These materials, typically hidden inside walls, are brought to the forefront to reflect on the physical and symbolic structures we build around ourselves. Their calcium content links them to bodies, bones, and geologic time
